October Member of the Month: Michael Perry
1. Do you have any special hobbies/interests? If so, what are they?
Michael Perry: I enjoy spending time with family and friends. I am a minister so I enjoy worshiping with my family and sharing good news with others. I also enjoy watching and playing sports with my sons.
2. What is/was your position and how long have you been in the position?
MP: My current position at Daikin America is Safety Specialist and VPP Coordinator. I have worked in Safety Department since 2008. I started as an operator in 1999. I have worked for Daikin America Inc. for almost 20 years.
3. What has been the greatest challenge in your career?
MP: One of the greatest challenges I have in working in safety is developing new approaches to Safety Training and employee involvement. Also working to increase my knowledge as a Safety Professional. Staying on top of regulations and conducting or preparing for audits can be challenging.
4. What is your most recent accomplishment?
MP: I serve as Chairperson for the North Alabama VPP Committee and was able to assist a few companies on their VPP journey. I also received the Mentor of the Year Award for Region 4 in 2018.
5. How did you get involved in the Safety & Health world?
MP: At my place of employment, Safety has always been encouraged. However when we started our VPP journey I volunteered to help with the process by assisting the leader of the Employee Safety Committee. Soon afterwards, I was able to work with the Safety Department all which are passionate about safety which I was able to imitate. My Supervisor at the time helped me to develop in the field of safety. Since then its been a privilege to assist in making sure our plant site is a safe one.
6. What makes you passionate about the VPPPA?
MP: The conferences!! VPPPA provides so much information and knowledge sharing that aids in making great safety programs excel.
7. What has been your favorite aspect of the Association?
MP: The ability to network with the best of the best in the safety world. There's years of experience and expertise that you can tap into to increase your individual knowledge that can be used to enhance your safety program.
8. What advice would you give to someone interested in the VPP or the VPPPA?
MP: If you want to be a success in the safety and health and continue to improve your individual and plant Safety Program? Start the journey with VPP and become a member of the VPPPA and you will see how you can help in saving lives and preventing injuries. You will be satisfied knowing that you are to become the best by working with the best.
