October 10 marks World Mental Health Day and, in today’s dynamic work environment, mental health and psychological safety are no longer optional considerations—they are essential. As leaders in safety & health, our responsibilities extend beyond managing tasks and processes or overseeing performance. It’s about creating an environment where employees feel secure, valued, and supported—emotionally, mentally, and professionally, and where personal continuous improvement is promoted.
Why Mental Health Matters
Mental health challenges like burnout, anxiety, and depression are becoming prevalent in workplaces. The World Health Organization reports that 15% of working-age adults experience some form of mental health condition, and untreated mental health issues cost the global economy over $1 trillion annually in lost productivity. These challenges not only impact individual employees but also affect organizational performance through higher absenteeism, lower productivity, and turnover rates.
To address these issues, companies should proactively offer mental health resources such as access to counseling, mental health days, or flexible working options. Studies have shown that employees who feel supported in their mental health are three times more likely to be engaged at work. Prioritizing mental health is not just an act of compassion but a sound business strategy that promotes retention and productivity.
Psychological Safety: The Foundation for Growth
Psychological safety is the belief that employees can express themselves openly without fear of retaliation or judgment. In Google’s study of their most successful teams, psychological safety was identified as the most critical factor for team performance. Employees who feel psychologically safe are more likely to offer innovative ideas, admit mistakes, and collaborate effectively.
Fostering this environment means listening, showing empathy, and encouraging open communication. When employees feel safe to share their thoughts and concerns, they contribute more effectively and embrace opportunities for growth and innovation.
The Role of Empathy in Leadership
Empathy is a cornerstone of servant leadership. 92% of employees say that empathy is undervalued in their workplace, yet it’s a key driver of trust and engagement. Empathetic leaders understand and address both the professional and personal challenges of their team members. This not only strengthens relationships but also fosters a culture of openness and psychological safety. Leaders who prioritize empathy are able to cultivate deeper connections, improving overall team performance.
VPPPA: A Community of Support and Mentorship
One of the most powerful ways to foster both mental health and psychological safety is by being part of a supportive community. VPPPA works to fill that role, bringing together like-minded individuals committed to EHS&S and safety leadership development. Within VPPPA, site and individual mentorship thrives as members share experiences, insights, and advice with their peers.
Mentorship plays a vital role in enhancing mental well-being and psychological safety. It provides employees with a trusted guide who can help them navigate challenges, foster resilience, and build confidence. In this community, every member has the opportunity to both give and receive guidance, creating an environment where continuous improvement and support are mutual.
By belonging to the VPPPA, our member’s employees are not only part of an organization focused on continuous improvement in EHS&S, but also part of a network that empowers them to thrive professionally and personally.
